Rockstar encrypting the files in GTA Vfor PC is possibly starting to make sense. The company has been extremely secretive about the PC release of the title and very secure with what access PC gamers have to the files… that is, until the RAGE Team got a hold of GTA Vand cracked it open like a farmer splitting a walnut during a hazy summer night on a rickety old porch. What the modders found inside seems to hint at why Rockstar has the PC files on lockdown.
Over on the GTA Forums a couple of modders have been digging around in the digital intestines of GTA V’s file structures – and while they’re only able to view files and not import or edit them, yet – they came across some very interesting content within the encrypted RPF files using the newly released OpenIV GTA modding toolkit from the RAGE Team.
Forum user Glumok spotted something that may make a few of you blow your loads: John Marston. You probably don’t believe it until you see it, so I’ll post the photo of the file and the textures and model data of the protagonist from Red Dead Redemption below.
The interesting thing about it is that each of those files above indicate that Marston at least has a fully operable civilian head. Since I haven’t been able to look at the data myself, it could be a head that’s used on various bodies. Also, since the head has a complete texture set with his entire face in one file it means you won’t be able to customize the character, which also means that he’s either part of a scripted sequence, an NPC or a playable character in a single-player mission.
Furthermore, this also means that you should hold onto your horses because there’s even more. According to Glumok, he stated…
It is interesting, because even if horse was findable in the original PS3/X360 release version of the game, this file is in the latest Heist DLC, and is called “horse_new”!”
Remember, though, there were quite a few references in the original XML data that pointed to original content for the PC version of GTA V. New heists and DLC featuring horses is not out of the question. Rockstar even mentioned a while back that updates on the PS3 and Xbox 360 will eventually stop, as reported by Gamespot. The old consoles have steep, decade-old limitations, so that’s not surprising.
However, given that Red Dead Redemption was never released on PC it wouldn’t be unlikely that Rockstar could do a total conversion DLC release for PC featuring a western setting, Marston, horses and a heist using the GTA V engine and assets to pull it off. A western themed bit of DLC similar to the Episodes from Liberty City wouldn’t be completely out of the question. They have the tools… they have the technology… and apparently they already have the assets stored in GTA V for whatever reason.
The GTA Forums crew are ripe with brilliant minds, and they’re unearthing all sorts of fascinating data ever since the latest OpenIV went live.
Right now, however, the RAGE Team is still working on iterating the toolkit to do more than just open and view files, which is what modders are relegated to doing at the moment due to Rockstar’s encryption on the game files. However, soon modders will be able to actually mod GTA V and that’s when the real fun will begin.
In the meantime, you can keep an eye on the discussion happening around the modding scene for Rockstar’s latest title being released on PC by paying a very, very kind visit to your modding saviors and overlords over on the GTA Forums. Glorious PC Gaming Master Race forever.

Forum user Jesoph was rummaging through the files and spotted some more content worth talking about. As noted on the forums…
He’s talking about this image of a test reel file found in GTA V’s files. Check it out below.
