1/8/2007 - Seeking the next Eminem

'(White) Rapper Show' debuts Monday on VH1

Blame Vanilla Ice and thank Eminem.

The only thing the two rappers really have in common is that they're, well, white guys.

Unlike Ice, the Detroit rapper didn't need to fabricate a saucy past life -- and wear blinding, shiny outfits -- in order to win fans. And even though Eminem has sold millions of albums and is one of the best-selling artists of the past decade, it's still hard out there for a white rapper.

That cultural divide is front and center of a new VH1 reality series, "The (White) Rapper Show." The show, coproduced by Ego Trip, a team that produces multimedia projects, is on a mission to discover the next great white rapper -- and dig a bit into America's attitudes about race, cultural legitimacy and an art form that was created (and has been historically dominated) by African Americans.

The show's concept: A group of aspiring rappers moves into a house in the Bronx and goes through a series of competitions -- with one contestant eliminated each episode.

And the host? Hip-hop legend MC Serch (real name Michael Berrin), who in the late '80s was part of 3rd Bass, a ( 2/3 white) rap group that earned much respect in hip-hop circles and is best-known for the hit "Pop Goes the Weasel," which famously trashed Vanilla Ice.

Serch, who lives in Oakland County with his wife, Chantel, and their three children, until last spring hosted the morning show at WJLB-FM (97.9). Serch chatted recently about the new show, which premieres Monday.

1/16/2007: G-Unit's Sha Money XL Launches One Stop Shop Producers Conference

Sha Money XL's Money Management Group and G-Unit Records will present the first annual One Stop Shop producers conference, which will take place Feb. 10-11 in Phoenix, AZ.

The One Stop Shop, which takes place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Phoenix, is a two-day conference dedicated to producers.

The conference has confirmed a number of heavyweight Hip-Hop producers as panelists, including DJ Premier, Swizz Beatz, The Alchemist, Fred Wreck, Hi-Tek, 9th Wonder, Havoc, Dangerous LLC, Sha Money XL and others.

"The conference is a dream come true," Sha Money XL told AllHip-Hop.com. "I've been to [conferences like] 'How Can I Be Down' and 'Jack the Rapper,' but never to a conference specialized for us producers. So I pulled out the check book, bought out a hotel, called all my Hip-Hop friends, from top notch producers to all the new ones that always ask me to help, because I knew I would be talking to all the guys who just don't know how to get themselves out there."

The event will feature workshops on A&R, publishing, the latest studio equipment, production tips and techniques and other educational panels aimed at pushing aspiring producers careers along.

Hopefuls will also be able to participate in the One Stop Shop Beat Battle for a contract with Money Management and play their production for the entire roster of G-Unit artists, which includes 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Tony Yayo and others.

"Producers can ask questions to producers that made it, shop their tracks to A&R's from every label from G-Unit on down and meet all the top publishers in the game," Sha Money explained. "This is where if your game is tight and your music is right, you can come out this conference a winner and come up in the game."

The two-day business and networking event will also feature a Hip-Hop expo with local Phoenix vendors that specialize in tattoos, rims, clothing, custom haircuts and other specialty items."

The event is sponsored by Vitamin Water, iStandard Producers, XPOZ Magazine, AllHipHop.com, G-Unit Records, G-Unit Clothing and others.

According to Sha Money XL, he chose Phoenix because of the city's growing technology industry, as well as the areas stable weather.

"People can expect two hours about publishing, production, the art of sound with top engineers, meet every A&R and relax in the warm Arizona climate. I also bought out the whole kitchen and bar so they will be eating good and feeling good. The Hip-Hop game needs this!"

1/16/2007: Is Canada Profiling U.S. Rappers?

Jerome Almon, CEO of Detroit-based Murdercap Records, has filed a eyebrow-raising $900 million lawsuit in federal court against the Canadian government, the American State Department and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The suit, apparently prepared for Almon by the chief of Detroit’s American Civil Liberties Union accuses the defendants of “wholesale profiling” of rap artists and African-Americans.

Almon claims that he can document more than 80 instances between 1992 and 2003 during which he was detained and questioned by border guards while trying to enter Canada. He also says that he was periodically and falsely accused of having a criminal record and that racist comments were directed at him by Canadian officials. But according to Almon, the suit is not being filed solely on his behalf.

Almon reportedly mentioned well-documented incidents in which everyone from DMX to 50 Cent to Eminem have been either refused entry or detained while attempting to enter the country. According to Almon, Canada is engaging in profiling based on a government-held belief that rap music can be blamed for an increase in gang violence and violent homicides in Toronto and Vancouver. ” They’re treating us as if we’re criminals,'’ Almon said, adding, “If the Klan had a police force, it would be the border services.'’ The Canadian government has reportedly pointed to a shooting that took place in Toronto in 2003, after a 50 Cent show as an example of the direct connection between rap music and gun violence.

So what’s Condoleezza Rice have to do with this? According to Almon “the State Department has in its possession secret internal Canadian investigative reports admitting that the country is worse at racial profiling than the U.S., yet, Rice has sided with the Canadian government against African Americans in what he says is destined to become ‘The State Department’s Katrina.’”

Almon’s conspiracy theory further alleges that not only is the U.S. State Department aware of Canada’s prejudicial policy, but that it is complicit in a bribery cover-up relating to one of 50 Cent’s aborted Canadian tours. Further, he alleges that while Canada profiles U.S. rappers, it is protects known Muslim terrorists responsible for U.S. casualties. He also claims Canada has a Rap Intelligence Unit that employs information-sharing with the FBI.

Regardless of how batshit (or not) you find these claims to be, the trial should be fun to follow. Check out this incredible list of alleged witnesses: 50 Cent, Secretary Rice, Jay-Z, P. Diddy, Oprah Winfrey, Colin Powell, Eminem, and Spike Lee.

What do you think? On the one hand these claims sound really outrageous and paranoid, but on the other hand there are facts to back them up. Is there any truth to Almon’s claims?

'EMINEM IS GEWELDIG'
